How "years ago" is counted

The headline number is the whole years from January 1 of that year to today. A year such as 2020 is five years back in 2025 and six in 2026.

The detail line breaks the same gap into years, months and days. It is useful for ages of buildings, cars, devices and companies.

Weeks and hours come from the same count of days. They do not change during the day, because the count starts at midnight.

What each year page shows

Each year has a calendar summary with the weekday of January 1, whether it was a leap year and when Easter fell. It also names the Chinese zodiac animal.

A timeline marks how far each part of the year sits from today. A small calculator turns the year into an age for anyone born then.

Years that share a calendar are listed too, so you can find another year with the same weekdays.

Why people ask how long ago

The question comes up when someone dates a photo or a document. It also comes up for school anniversaries, warranties, family history and news stories.

A year in the past is hard to feel. Seeing it as years, months and days makes the distance concrete, and the nearby years let you compare.

For an exact date rather than a whole year, the days between dates tool counts from any day in history to today.

Using the year pages

The pages are most useful when you want a quick answer with a bit of context. They give a clear headline number, and the facts below help you check it.

The list of milestone years covers round numbers and recent years. Each one links to its page once that page is live. Years outside the list are reached through the question box.

Anniversaries are shown for each year too. A 50th or a 100th anniversary is a common reason to look back, and the page names the year it lands in.

Leap years and counting back

A leap year adds a day, and that matters when you count back across many years. The count of days uses the real calendar, so it includes every leap day between then and now.

That is why the days figure is not just the years multiplied by 365. It is always a little higher, by about a quarter of a day per year.

Years, months and days

A whole number of years is easy to say, but it can hide almost a full year of difference. A year that began in January is closer to the next whole number than one that began in December.

That is why each page also gives months, weeks and days. You can pick the unit that fits the question, whether that is a car, a house or a friendship.

For a date inside a year, the days between dates tool gives the same breakdown from any day to today.

Calendars that repeat

Each year page tells you when the same calendar returns. A calendar repeats when the year type and the weekday of January 1 match.

That can be useful for old photos or documents. If the dates and weekdays on a page match a calendar, you can narrow down the year.

Questions people ask

Does the count start on January 1?

Yes. A year is counted from January 1, so the number of years ago is the whole years from that day to today.

Why does the number change on January 1?

Each new calendar year adds one year to every count. The nightly rebuild picks that up on the first night of the year.

Can I find the age of someone born in a year?

Yes. Each year page has a small box where you enter a birth year, and it shows the age in that year and this year.

What if I need a date, not a year?

Use the days between dates tool. It counts from any date to today and breaks the gap into years, months and days.
