Why the number of Thursdays changes each year
A year holds 52 weeks and a single extra day. That day is the reason a fixed date does not stay on the same weekday.
When October 1 is a Friday, as it is now, the count of Thursdays up to it comes to 48.
Leap years carry 366 days, so dates slide two weekdays forward. Over a four year cycle the weekday of October 1 visits most of the week.
Check today and again later and the count will not match. Whenever a Thursday is over, it is taken off the list.
Using the count for planning
Think of each Thursday as one slot in a schedule. The count shows how many slots are free, so you can divide the work.
Managers set weekly check-ins on a Thursday and need to know how many remain. Retailers use the same number to plan sales and stock.
We never count today or October 1. A reader who wants them can add one for each that falls on a Thursday.
Because a Thursday comes round only once a week, the number left before October 1 is a fair measure of time. Few other counts are as simple.
Count backward from October 1 if that helps. The last Thursday before it is the one to protect, and the rest can be flexible.
Teachers, coaches and managers can use the figure to plan sessions. Each Thursday is one slot, and the page shows how many remain.
These counts use the Gregorian calendar and ignore time of day. A Thursday counts as passed once the date has changed in your zone.
Businesses use the same logic for stock and staffing. A set number of Thursdays means a set number of repeat tasks.
When you plan around October, it helps to see the Thursdays as separate chances. Each one is a day you can use for errands, calls or rest. Keep the page handy for next time.
If you are unsure about a boundary, check the first and last dates in the list. They show exactly where the count begins and ends.
Because the Thursdays are listed in order, you can spot gaps and doubled up weeks at a glance. That helps when a plan has to be rearranged.

The same count in other years
A look at other years shows how much the answer varies. The weekday of October is the main reason.

Questions people ask
Is October 1 counted as a Thursday?
It makes no difference this year, because October 1 falls on a Friday. We never count the day itself.
Is today counted?
Today is never part of the count. The total begins tomorrow and updates when midnight passes in your zone.
Does the count change in another time zone?
Slightly. The count follows your local calendar day, so two readers in far apart zones may see numbers a day apart.
Can a month have 5 Thursdays?
Sometimes. A month of 29 days or longer will have five Thursdays when its first day is the right weekday. See Thursdays in 2028 for the months with five.
How many Thursdays are left in 2026?
2026 has 9 left after today, and the last falls on Thursday, December 31.
